It's time for the NFL Thanksgiving games...
As the official partner of The Nat Coombs Show check out Nat's view on the all important Thanksgiving game.
Lions / Bears. The Lions are the number one team in football right now and in a season of comeback stories. None would be sweeter than seeing Detroit QB Jared Goff, discarded by the LA Rams a few years back, making it back to the Super Bowl, and this time getting it done.
Despite boasting the best record in the NFC, there are still those out there that feel that Goff, and his head coach Dan Campbell, will come unstuck in the deep waters of the playoffs, when it’s clutch time. There’s no doubt the Lions have a seat at the table. Question is, will they blink?
The Bears fought another contender, Minnesota, hard last Sunday, losing narrowly in OT. Although the Vikes gifted them the opportunity for the fight back. Nevertheless, it was another impressive display from a fast-improving Caleb Williams – who has had underwhelming protection for much of the season. The number one overall pick stood up well to the ferocious Vikings defense. Although the Bears will need more from their ground game if they’re going to trouble the Lions in similar fashion.
Chicago can win by….exploiting the fact the Lions are banged up defensively in two key areas - up front and in their secondary. If the Bears fragile line can contain the Lions pass rush enough to let Williams build on his success in recent weeks and feed Keenan Allen and Rome Adunze. Then they’ll have a shot.
Detroit can win by…… outpacing Chicago. The Lions have allowed just opponents just 10.5 points per game (over their last six games) and we know Goff & co will put up plenty of points . 45 TD’s and counting, ranked number one in the NFL. So even with the injuries on D, they may just out-blaze the Bears.
Cowboys/Giants. The Cowboys roll into this one with their tails up, after a thrilling upset win against Washington on Sunday. Which included one of the plays of the season courtesy of Kavonte Turpin – who faked us all out by letting kick-off return he was fielding through his legs, only to promptly to drop a Madden-esque spin move, and return it 99- yards to the house.
New York in contrast is in total freefall and are currently starting their third string QB Tommy Devito. Who comes complete with agent Sean Stellato, straight out of The Sopranos central casting.
And to add insult to injury, their former star RB Saquon Barkley, who they let go in the off season, is on a MVP tear with divisional rivals, and Super Bowl contenders, the Philadelphia Eagles. Ouch.
But…..this is a rivalry that runs deep. And both teams will want to put on a show in primetime.
Keys to this game? The trenches. Can the Cowboys Micah Parsons wreak havoc on a weak Giants offensive line, getting to Devito, and keeping the impressive Tyrone Tracy in check?
And in contrast, can one of the sole bright spots in an ugly season for New York, Dexter Lawrence add to his impressive 9 sack tally, and unsettle the Cowboys very own back-up QB Cooper Rush?
So, if you're still to make plans for America's favourite holiday, and plans that need to include NFL - my advice. Head to Hickory's for the NFL Thanksgiving Games.
Happy Thanksgiving Folks, Nat
